There are two mothers. One of them is the mother of 'kim cheong' and the other is the mother of 'ah beng'. While letting their kids play, the two started arguing about how much better one of them was. ah beng's mother started the argument. kim cheong's mother soon fuelled it.
ah beng's mother, or Mother 1, first tried to show off that ah beng was smart as he could know the whole story of a television show after watching it. In my opinion, many children nowadays could do the exact same thing as ah beng. In fact, Mother 1 is giving the impression that ah beng is a lazy person who sits around, watching television a lot. This does not show the attributes of a smart person.
Nowhere in the poem does Mother 1 talk about ah beng's academics. She may be showing off ah beng merely to get a good reputation. I feel that she has too much pride on herself.

I think the mother is also showing that she is proud of her son and his achievements by showing off to her neighbor. I think that it is important for a parent to show that they are proud and happy for their child. The child can feel good about themselves. But, the mothers in the poem are boasting to show off how good they are as a mother to their child by boasting how good their child is. So, the mothers should have the right motive which is to be proud of their children no matter what, even though the best of their children is not the best in standard.
ReplyDeleteInstead of showing off, the two mothers should show care and concern for each other as they are also neighbours after all (they are staying in the same estate).

I think that the mothers should live in harmony.And both should not boast as it will cause further conflict between the neighbour.Conflict will make more troubles.
